About Us
The Department of Community Medicine is one of the para-clinical departments of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences. The objective of this Department is to provide a high quality training in Community Medicine to the under graduate medical students enrolled for MBBS and post graduate medical students enrolled for MD Community Medicine. The other activities of the Department are to conduct basic research, conduct training programs and to provide promotive, preventive and curative health services to the community for the health and welfare of the people. The department runs a rural health training centre (RHTC) situated in hosabyrohally about 13 Kms from Bangalore. It was established in the year 1983. The RHTC has a well equipped AV aids, training hall and mess. Staffs, Post Graduate & Interns are posted to the RHTC. The department also runs an urban health training centre (UHTC) situated in Yarabnagar, about 0.5 kms from the KIMS Hospital. In KIMS Hospital & Research Center, the department runs the Preventive Medicine Unit (PMU) which has a anti rabies clinic, allergy clinic and adult immunization clinic. Clincal trials and other research projects are conducted in the unit. The department has an annual intake of 6 MD seats.


Facilities
The facilities available in the department are as per the requirement of NMC . The following are some of them I.Department •SEMINAR HALL-There are two well equipped seminar halls having projector, internet, smart tv(65 inch TV), computer and audio visual aids with one of the seminar halls in addition having interactive white board and camera used extensively for undergraduate and post graduate training. •PRACTICAL HALL - is used to train under graduates and post graduates in practical aspects of public health. •RESEARCH LAB: The research lab has a statistical cell, computer, internet and reference materials for students to enhance the research skill with the faculty. •DEPARTMENT LIBRARY: has the latest National and International Journals, books, , volumes and computer with internet facility. •MUSEUM - The museumexhibits information on the various aspects and components of public health •POST GRADUATE –The post graduates have individual cubicles with internet for academic learning. The centre is also involved in research work including dissertation and PhD topics, which have a direct beneficial effect on patient care and needs. II.RURAL HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE, HOSABYROHALLY The department of Community Medicine runs the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) Hosabyrohally and is situated about 18 KMs from KIMS, Banashankari. The RHTC caters to the health care needs of the rural population ,has an Out Patient Department (OPD),facilities for patient examination , minor surgical procedures room with basic laboratory investigations, ILR and Deep Freezer for routine immunization. The RHTC has a well equipped AV aids training hall with white board, TV, LCD projector & computer with power backup used extensively for undergraduate, Interns and post graduate training. There exists an MOU with three Primary Health Centers namely PHC Kengeri, K. Gollahally and PHC Sullikere and the department works in close coordination with them in day to day functioning and implementation of all the national programmes, etc. III.URBAN HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE, Yarabnagar The Department of Community Medicine runs the Urban Health Training Centre(UHTC),Yarabnagar. The UHTC has an Out Patient Department (OPD), facilities for patient examination with basic laboratory investigations to cater for the urban poor. The UHTC has a well equipped AV aids training hall with white board, TV & computer with power backup. The UHTC is used for undergraduate, Interns and Post graduates field visits, family study and implementation of national program. There is an MOU with UPHC, Yarabnagara, where Interns and Post Graduates are posted for routine activities IV.PREVENTIVE MEDICINE UNIT, KIMSHR&C • ANTI RABIES CLINIC The Anti Rabies Clinic(ARC) provides comprehensive treatment (Pre exposure ,re exposure & post exposure prophylaxis) for all animal bites cases and acts as referral hospital to patients from many districts. Apart from dog bite management, the centre is actively involved in conducting rabies biological phase-II,III and IV clinical studies. • ALLERGY CLINIC Allergy clinic provides comprehensive preventive, diagnostic (Skin prick test) and curative treatment(Immunotherapy) for allergy patients. Clinical trials and epidemiological studies in field of allergy and asthma are conducted regularly. It is the first centre in India to have conducted research studies on Rush allergen Immunotherapy and cluster allergen immunotherapy. • ADULT IMMUNIZATION The Preventive Medicine Unit is also an adult vaccination centre with all the recent vaccines including covid 19 vaccine made available .The centre is also used for clinical trials. • VACCINATION CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS & CERTIFICATION The Preventive Medicine Unit is a recognized vaccination centre for International travellers and provides certification for the same.
